My work operates in the hazy area between art and design. Though I am formally trained as a printmaker, I prefer the term print media artist as it more accurately reflects the expansive nature of the discipline. This foundation in print media allows me to move freely from image to image, context to context, quickly and with expertise, unrestrained by loyalty to a particular technical approach. The printed nature of my work situates it in the landscape of Visual Studies and Popular Culture as much as the History of Art.

At the core of my practice is a fascination with images; I have an insatiable appetite for visual culture. While the degree of context and history may vary, no image exists in a vacuum. From books and posters to film and the internet, images function within a complex dialogue of quotes, references, and appropriations. This “background” information necessitates the viewing of images through the lens of cultural studies, art history, critical theory, philosophy, and anthropology. Often times, the point of this visual dialogue seems only to assure the participant of his or her ownership and mastery of culture.

In my work, I freely incorporate figures from disparate realms: politics, science fiction, and nature are a few sources. The interference of the human hand and layering of pattern and color create a “camouflaged” picture plane- an ambiguous place left open to interpretation. Through juxtaposition of an evolving and growing vocabulary of icons, the potential of new relationships is revealed. Ultimately, larger-than-life characters, worlds in conflict, and suspension of disbelief are merged to make images that highlight the tension between reality and fantasy, between humor and drama.
